Self-Portrait Tonal Drawing (Year 8, 2017)

At the beginning of year 8 our students embark upon a challenging self-portrait project. This project sees our students analysing how portraiture has changed over time, developing their historical understanding and analytical skills. The students then develop an A3 tonal self-portrait, this element builds upon prior learning with a particular focus on proportions and tonal values. In this project, students extend their understanding of tonal values by exploring how mixed-media and assist us in exaggerating tone, we used pencil, charcoal, watercolour, graphite, pen and graphite to create high contrast and depth. Linking to other artists studied, our students have used the format of a self-portrait in order to convey personality and mood.
